Meet Our Founders
Dr. Simbi Animashaun - Founder & CEO

“Every child on the spectrum deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated. Our mission is to make sure no family walks this journey alone.”
My journey with autism is deeply personal. As a mother, educator, and advocate, I co-founded Horizon Over the Spectrum, Inc. alongside my children’s father, Maurice Payne. Our nonprofit was born from both lived experience and a deep understanding of the unique challenges that Black families face when navigating an autism diagnosis.
When my child was first diagnosed, I was overwhelmed—there were so many questions but few answers that truly addressed our cultural and community needs. I quickly realized that Black children are often diagnosed later than their peers, limiting access to early intervention services that are critical for development. Families are often left to navigate this journey alone, with little guidance on where to turn for support. I knew something had to change.
With over 15 years of experience in education and a doctorate in Educational Technology, I have dedicated my career to empowering students and families. However, my most meaningful work began when I became a mother advocating for my own children’s needs. I experienced firsthand the struggle of finding culturally competent care, educational resources, and inclusive support systems. I channeled these experiences into action, creating Horizon Over the Spectrum, Inc. to ensure that other families wouldn’t face the same barriers.
Through our nonprofit, we provide early support for newly diagnosed children, educational workshops for parents, and a community of understanding and advocacy. Our goal is to bridge the gap in autism awareness, ensuring that all children—regardless of background—receive the resources and support they deserve.
I hope that every family feels empowered, that every child on the spectrum is allowed to thrive, and that together, we can create a future where no one is left behind.

Our Mission
At Horizon Over the Spectrum, Inc., we are dedicated to empowering and supporting children with autism, ages 2–14, and their families—especially within the Black community. We provide guidance, education, and advocacy to help families navigate the autism journey with confidence, love, and culturally responsive resources.

Our Vision
We envision a world where every child on the autism spectrum has access to early diagnosis, quality resources, and a strong support system—regardless of racial or socioeconomic barriers. Through awareness, education, and community-driven programs, we strive to bridge the gap in autism support for Black families.

Why We Exist
Black children are often diagnosed with autism later than their peers, limiting their access to early intervention services that are critical for their development. Many families also face barriers to autism-friendly resources, educational tools, and culturally competent care. Horizon Over the Spectrum, Inc. was created to change this reality by providing early support, which helps families understand autism, seek proper evaluations, access intervention services, and create educational resources by offering culturally relevant tools, workshops, and information for parents and caregivers.
